March 28-31st, 2012:
The Light and Color of Santa Fe, NM
Light, composition, color, design, gesture, and moment—these are the elements that make photographs visually powerful and emotionally memorable. The measure of a great photograph is the power it has to evoke a response from the viewer. In this workshop, we strive to create visually striking images that provoke emotional responses, using the wonderfully visual places in and around Santa Fe. Contact Santa Fe Workshops for more information and to register.
May 2-6th, 2012:
2012: Yosemite: Dogwood and Moonbows - MS
Early May has a full moon and it’s a great time to get ‘moonbows’ – the equivalent of a rainbow but created by a bright moon shining on the mist from falls instead. It’s also a time when the dogwood trees are opening up their beautiful soft white bracts (what are often called petals), and the Merced River is flowing. Price: $1400 includes 4 nights private room and tuition.

May 10-20th, 2012:
Umbria - The Green Heart of Italy - Still a few spaces
Join me and professional photographer Jed Manwaring as we explore Umbria. After visiting Tuscany several times, we went to Umbria and fell in love it with it, too! So much of Umbria is ancient – and that means picturesque for photographers. We’ll still start out with a quick visit to our favorite area of Tuscany around Pienza, enroute to Umbria. Magical hill towns, with winding alleys, stone churches, cloisters, and central piazzas await our exploration. The land surrounding the hill towns is also lovely. We”ll see the main parts of Umbria, including Orvieto, Todi, Spello, Gubbio and Assisi, along with sleepy villages in the countryside. Scheduled during the height of Spring, we’ll have lush green fields and no doubt red poppies and other wildflowers blooming, and lovely geraniums spilling out of window boxes and lining the doorways of houses. Click on the tour title to go to a dedicated page on Umbria for more information.

June 3-8, 2012:
2012: Palouse Hills in Spring, WA – MS
Join me and professional photographer Jed Manwaring as we explore the rolling hills and pastoral ‘scapes’ of the Palouse region of eastern Washington in Spring. A photographer’s paradise for old barns, bucolic country scenes, monolithic grain silos, and landscapes of undulating fields. Spring brings the bright yellow bloom of canola to the fields, adding an accent to the lush green of new crops and freshly plowed earth. We’ll spend time in the heart of the Palouse, between the towns of Colfax, Pullman, and Palouse, and venture into western Idaho for more dramatic scenery. In addition to working alongside of you and sharing how we see, you’ll learn to improve your composition and viewpoint. You’ll learn how we use the HDR process to create natural-looking images, We’ll discuss the software we use for processing our images and our overall workflow. This tour offers one image review session. Please note that in 2012, Steptoe Butte is slated to be closed at some point during the spring through fall season, for installation of new cell towers. Yet there is so much more to photograph than just the view from there, however; and, we have Tekoa Mountain and Kamiak Butte that can provide elevated views. Price: $1200 tuition only.

July 1-6, 2012:
2012: Beautiful Oregon Coast - MS
Join me and professional photographer Jed Manwaring as we explore and photograph the beauty of the Oregon Coast during a week of good low tides. The tidepools and seastacks and rocks that are exposed during a low tide are incredible opportunities for everything from moody landscapes to macro photographs. The coast at this time of year has the potential for fog, rain, sunshine, all of it providing the mood that represents the coast of Oregon. We’ll travel from Bandon to Newport visiting lighthouses, boat harbors, boatyards, temperate forests and more. We’ll be out photographing in early mornings and late afternoons, and sunset into twilight to capture the magic light and the mood of the coast. In addition to working alongside of you and sharing how we see, you’ll learn to improve your composition and viewpoint. You’ll learn how we use the HDR process to create natural-looking images, We’ll discuss the software we use for processing our images and our overall workflow. This tour offers one image review session. Price: $1200 tuition only.

September 7-9, 2012:
Put away your ‘big boy/girl’ cameras for this fun weekend of using just your iPhone and creative Apps to make artistic photographs. The iphone/Ipad camera opens us all up to more creative expression, whether you use it as a life diary or as a way to create artistic pictures. Many pro photographers have embraced it as another way to express their creativity. Using the phone camera has proven to be creatively freeing for many photographers, and a way to explore their vision. Join me and PNWAS on beautiful Whidbey Island, WA, for this informative and fun workshop.

Many of us love to travel, to see the exotic, yet we don’t have to travel very far to make great photographs! The beauty we see elsewhere is often also right in front of us. We can become jaded to the beauty that is right in our own backyards as we pass by it daily. Join me in this week to re-awaken your ability to see creatively right where you are, while exploring Whidbey Island.

September 16-24, 2012 :
Join me on the Delphinus as we explore the Johnstone Strait in British Columbia. More Orcas inhabit this region than exist in the rest of British Columbia and Southeast Alaska combined! This is the best, most consistent time of the year to see them. Yet it’s also a great time to see Pacific white-sided dolphins, Dall porpoise, and more marine animals and birds. And the scenery is beautiful. September is typically the sunniest and the driest weather of the year here. Along with spending lots of time with the Orcas and marine life, we’ll visit abandoned native villages, some with old totems, old-growth forests, and black bear habitat. Price is $3695 and includes all meals while on board boat, land excursions en route, naturalist service and photography guidance. Details to follow soon on my site, but for now if you want to sign up space, contact Dolphin Charters.

Fall Color on Madeline Island, Wisconsin
Madeline Island School of Arts (MISA) has invited me to teach a photography class during their peak of Autumn color. While we can’t guarantee the fall colors, we can guarantee that you’ll have a great time making pictures and you’ll learn a lot while doing so on the island and nearby mainland. I’ll be teaching the elements of an expressive photograph, seeing and working with the light, expressive in-camera techniques, post-processing techniques to bring out your vision and more. Daily critiques and field trips. Details are coming soon on their website. Madeline Island is surrounded by Lake Superior and the other Apostle Islands.
