| Artist Statement I am continually awed by nature's grand design. Beyond the explanation of physics, science, geometry and other human theories, there simply is no accounting for why a section of dried, curling mud is so beautiful- or why a hillside of burned trees can create a scene of such linear beauty! Perhaps we should marvel at the fact that we can perceive something like that as extraordinary. Why do humans perceive beauty? As a photographer, I am in search of those moments when light, form and color come together to create magic. Moments when I am given a gift - the opportunity to see more deeply. I seek passionately for those moments, and I am continually delighted when I come upon something that causes me to gasp in awe. It is my hope that my photographs will enable others to see the beauty that I have witnessed, to perhaps respond with the same awe and wonder that I felt as I made the images. Background I had the good fortune of having parents who were outdoor-oriented. Our family spent a great deal of time hiking, camping, canoeing, swimming, gardening, and all the while, I was developing an appreciation for the world. Through high school and college, I photographed nature and travel subjects. After years of working in a corporate environment, I finally realized that what I wanted most was to be making photographs. Thus I began my second full-time career, in photography. I now specialize in nature and travel photography. I studied earnestly with working professionals - in the editorial, photojournalism, nature, and travel fields - and developed my personal style and my passions along the way. I attended workshops through Maine Photo Workshops, Columbia School of Journalism, and with National Geographic photographers. Today, I am teaching at those renowned schools that gave me my start. |
