A tour client on our recent Cuba tour was often found standing off from those that waited their turn to photograph the ‘straight-on’ portrait of a guy or woman we found. The straight-on images were terrific, but while waiting  there were other angles to be explored. This is just one example of how you can make a candid image while others are making a portrait. The trick is to stand off to the side enough and back far enough that the subject isn’t distracted by you, so they keep eye contact with the person doing the straight-on portrait. I loved how this doorway framed the guy and when he blew a little smoke out from his cigar, it added life to the scene. This scene was captured in Viñales Valley in the agriculturally rich Pinar del Rio Province.
